Volume at the top, a narrow ankle
The Asa follows a harem or balloon shape: full through the seat, hip and thigh, then tapered sharply to a narrow gathered cuff. The fullness is what keeps the cloth off the skin, and the taper stops that fullness from reading as sloppy. The mid-rise sits at the hip rather than low on it, so the volume starts where it should.
The hem is ankle length, also called nine-point, which leaves the ankle visible. That is part of the design. The narrow cuff is the one place the pants show your shape, and low shoes or sandals show it best.
A waist you set yourself
The waistband is fully elasticated and gathered, and a flat tape drawstring comes out at the front centre, finished with cylindrical silver-tone metal tips. Tied loosely, it sits easily. Pulled in, it takes up more of the gather. There is no fly, no button and no belt loop, so the pants pull on and nothing else needs doing up. Two pockets sit in the side seams, out of the line of the front.
The cloth
The fabric is a woven cotton linen with a visible slub in the yarn, which gives it a matte, slightly crinkled surface in place of a flat, pressed one. It is regular in thickness and listed for summer. The garment weight is listed at about 290g to 345g depending on size and colour. The weave has no stretch, so the give at the waist and cuffs comes only from the elastic.
Sizing without a chart
We have not published a measurement chart for this style, and we are not going to guess at one. The cut is loose and the waist is elasticated and gathered, which makes it more forgiving than a fly-front trouser, but the cloth does not stretch, so do not size down expecting it to give. Sizes run S (US) M (JP) to 4XL (US) 5XL (JP), seven in total. If the fit is wrong, the return window is 14 days. The customer pays for the return label and refunds go to the original payment method.
Who they suit, and who they do not
They suit anyone who wants a loose, warm-weather pair with a distinct shape and an easy pull-on waist. Keep the top plain and close to the body so the pants carry the volume. They are less suited to anyone who wants a straight, clean line from hip to hem, or a trouser with a fly and belt loops for smarter settings.
Colours
Grey, green, black and blue, all solid with no print. The grey is a charcoal. Black is the least visible of the four in the slub texture. Whichever you pick, the shape does the work, not the colour.
