Design

Fuwa describes something light and soft, the way cloth behaves when it has room to move. These are cut wide and straight from thin cotton-linen, gathered at the waist and left open at the hem. They fall in one line from hip to shoe, and the volume is the whole point.

Description

A wide pant only works if the volume looks deliberate. Here it is. The leg opens as wide at the hem as it is at the thigh, with no taper and no cuff, so the cloth falls in a straight line and settles over the shoe.

The waist holds that volume in place. An elasticated band gathers the cloth into soft vertical folds, and a self-fabric drawstring ties at the center front, outside the band, to adjust it. There is no zip and no button, because the pair pulls on. The rise is low. Two pockets sit in the side seams at the hip, and one rounded patch pocket sits on the rear right hip.

The cloth is a thin cotton-linen weave, matte, with a subtle slub and a washed, softly crinkled surface. There is no stretch in it, so the room comes from the cut rather than the yarn. It is made for summer.

A wide leg that stays straight

Most wide pants flare or taper somewhere. This one does neither. The leg opening is equal to the thigh width, so the line drops straight from the hip and ends in an open, uncuffed hem with a clean folded topstitch. Because the pant is full length and the leg does not narrow, the hem lands on the shoe and puddles slightly.

That is the look, and it is also the trade-off. If you want a visible ankle or a cuff, this is not the cut.

The waist: elastic, gathers and a drawstring

The waistband is elasticated and gathered, and the gathers cascade down from it as soft vertical folds. That is where the generous volume at the hip comes from. A self-fabric drawstring sits at the center front, outside the band, so you can tighten the waist without relying on the elastic alone. The pants pull on and the rise is low, so they sit below the natural waist.

The cloth, and what to expect from it

The cloth is a thin cotton-linen weave with a matte surface and a subtle slub. It is washed, which gives it a soft crinkle. Expect a relaxed surface rather than a pressed one. It is a breathable, summer-weight cloth, and it has no stretch, so only the waistband gives.

Pros and trade-offs

  • Pro: room from hip to hem, with no tapering.
  • Pro: an adjustable waist, from the elastic plus the drawstring.
  • Pro: three pockets, two at the hip seams and one on the rear right.
  • Pro: a thin cloth that suits warm weather.
  • Trade-off: the hem puddles at the shoe, so there is no clean ankle line.
  • Trade-off: no stretch in the cloth, so the hip and thigh will not give if you size down.
  • Trade-off: the surface is softly crinkled, not crisp.
  • Trade-off: it is a summer piece, not a layer for cold weather.

Colors and sizes

Five colors: White, Grey, Black, Beige and Navy, all solid with no print. Seven sizes: S (US) M (JP), M (US) L (JP), L (US) XL (JP), XL (US) 2XL (JP), 2XL (US) 3XL (JP), 3XL (US) 4XL (JP) and 4XL (US) 5XL (JP). We have not published a size chart for this pair yet, so everything above is taken from the product specification and photos, not from our own measurements.

How to wear it

The volume is in the leg, so keep the rest plain. A tee or a short-sleeve shirt, tucked or loose, and low flat shoes that the hem can rest on.

Answers

Questions, answered

How wide is the leg?

Wide and straight. The leg opening is equal to the thigh width, so there is no taper from hip to hem, and the open, uncuffed hem lets the cloth fall straight and puddle slightly over the shoe. We have not published leg opening measurements for this pair yet, so the description here comes from the product specification and photos.

Which size should I order?

No size chart or body-weight guide is published for this pair yet, so we will not guess a number. What the specification does tell you: the cut is extremely loose with generous volume from hip to hem, the waist is elasticated with a drawstring so it adjusts, and the cloth has no stretch, so the hip and thigh will not give if you size down. There are seven sizes, S (US) M (JP) to 4XL (US) 5XL (JP). If the size is off, returns are accepted within 14 days. The return label is paid by the customer and refunds go to the original payment method.

What is the fabric like?

A thin cotton-linen weave with a matte finish and a subtle slub running through it. It is washed, so the surface carries a soft crinkle rather than a pressed finish. It is a breathable, summer-weight cloth. There is no stretch in the cloth itself. The only give is in the elasticated waistband.

How does the waist work?

The waistband is elasticated and gathers the cloth into soft vertical folds that run down from the waist. A self-fabric drawstring sits at the center front, outside the band, so you can tie it to adjust the fit. The pants pull on, with no zip and no buttons. The rise is low.

What pockets does it have?

Three. Two sit in the side seams at the hip. One rounded patch pocket sits on the rear right hip.

Which color should I choose?

Five colors: White, Grey, Black, Beige and Navy. All are solid, with no print or pattern. The pair is photographed in white, which reads as a clean, flat white with tonal stitching, so it shows the gathers and the slub texture most clearly.

Who is it not for?

Anyone who wants a tapered or ankle-length trouser. These are full length with an open hem that rests on the shoe. It is also not a cold-weather piece, because the cloth is thin and made for summer.

What do I wear it with?

Keep the top simple, because the volume is already in the leg. A plain tee or a short-sleeve shirt works, tucked or loose. Flat or low shoes suit the pooled hem best.
