Gelyu means "downstream" — the name is the brief. A pleated front releases volume exactly where you want it, the drop crotch keeps it off the thigh, and ribbed ankle cuffs gather the whole thing in so the leg reads deliberate rather than baggy. The fabric is soft against the skin and sturdy enough to hold the silhouette, breathable in summer and easy to wear year round. An elastic drawstring waist means no fighting a button all day, and there are roomy hip pockets and a back pocket, so you are not carrying anything in your hands.

Design

Gelyu means downstream. The whole pair is built around that idea — fabric that falls rather than fits, volume that moves with you instead of being arranged on you. Comfort with edge, which is a harder thing to cut than either one on its own.

Description

A harem pant that solves the usual problem with harem pants: too much fabric in the wrong place. The pleated front holds the volume at the waistband and releases it downward, so the hip and thigh stay clean while the leg still has room to move. The drop crotch does the rest, dropping the rise so the fold sits through the seat instead of bunching at the top of the leg.

Everything below that narrows. The leg tapers from the knee and finishes in ribbed ankle cuffs that hold the hem in place over a shoe, which is what separates a considered loose fitting trouser from a shapeless one. Your legs feel free the whole way down and the silhouette still ends somewhere specific.

The fabric is the quiet part of the design. Soft and sturdy at once — enough weight to hang properly and keep the pleats reading, breathable enough that it does not trap sweat on a warm day. It is the same reason the pair works as a jogger alternative and as something you would actually leave the house in.

The pleat is the whole design

Most harem pants put their volume in the wrong place. Fabric gathers at the top of the thigh, the hip looks wider than it is, and the result reads as too much rather than as a shape. A pleated front solves it mechanically: the fold at the waistband is where the extra width is stored, and it releases downward instead of outward. The hip stays clean, the thigh stays clean, and the volume arrives further down the leg where it actually does something.

The drop crotch works with it rather than against it. By lowering the rise, the fold falls through the seat, so the two pieces of extra fabric — the pleat and the dropped crotch — sit in two places you never look at. That is why this cut flatters a far wider range of builds than a straight baggy leg does.

How the leg ends

A loose pant lives or dies on the hem. Left open, the fabric drags and the whole silhouette loses its point. Ribbed ankle cuffs gather the leg in and hold the hem above a shoe, which gives the eye somewhere to stop and keeps the pair looking deliberate rather than oversized. It also means the perfect length is not something you have to get lucky with — the cuff sits where it sits regardless of your inseam.

The taper below the knee does the transition. Without it the jump from wide to cuffed looks abrupt; with it the leg narrows gradually and the cuff reads as the natural end of the line.

Fabric, comfort and the waistband

Soft and sturdy is a real requirement here, not a slogan. The cloth has to be gentle enough to wear all day against the skin and substantial enough to hold a pleat — a thin, cheap material collapses and the design disappears with it. This one is breathable, so it stays breezy in heat and does not hold sweat, and it has enough weight that the leg falls straight instead of floating.

The elastic drawstring waist is the detail people notice second and appreciate most. There is no button pressing into you after a meal and no belt required, and the drawstring takes up the slack at whatever point in the day you need it. Combined with the cut, it is why this pair is easy to wear for twelve hours and why your legs feel free the entire time.

Sizing, colours and wear

The range runs XS through 3XL in US sizing, equivalent to M through 5XL in Japanese sizing, and the chart on this page gives waist, hip, inseam and total length flat for each. Because the fit is loose by design, take your usual size; between two, take the smaller. Large and XXL buyers in particular should resist sizing up — the cut already has the room.

Three colours, each doing something different. Navy is the quiet one and the easiest to build an outfit around. Black is the sharpest and makes the silhouette read most architectural. Red is the one that makes the pair the statement, and it wants everything else kept plain. All three work with the same formula: close on top, low and simple on the feet, nothing competing with the leg.

Answers

Questions, answered

What size should I take?

Go by the waist measurement, not the letter. The waist is elasticated, so the chart gives a comfortable stretch range for each size — find the one your own waist sits inside and you are done. Hips and total length are listed too, from 100cm hips and 94cm length at XS up to 137cm and 102cm at 3XL. The cut is loose by design, so there is no need to size up for comfort.

What is a drop crotch, and will it suit me?

Drop crotch means the rise sits lower than the leg line, so the fold falls through the seat rather than gathering at the top of the thigh. It is far more forgiving than it sounds, because none of the extra fabric is anywhere you would notice it, and it works across a wide range of builds. If a straight baggy pair has ever felt like too much, this is the cut that fixes it.

Do they have pockets?

Two roomy hip pockets, deep enough to carry a phone while you walk, and a back pocket. The pleating means the hip pockets sit flat and do not bulge the silhouette when they are full, which is usually the trade-off with a loose trouser.

What does the fabric feel like?

Soft against the skin with enough body to hang properly — a light cloth would lose the pleats within an hour. It is breathable enough for summer and does not hold sweat, which is why the pair reads breezy in warm weather and still works the rest of the year.

Can I wear them as joggers?

Yes, and the ribbed cuffs are why. The hem holds its position over a trainer instead of dragging, so the pair behaves like a jogger while looking nothing like one. The difference is in the pleat and the drop crotch, which give a shape that a standard jogger does not have.

What should I wear with them?

Keep the top half close. A plain or boxy tee, a fitted long sleeve, or a noragi jacket worn open. Low-profile sneakers finish the line; chunky shoes crowd the cuff. The pants are the statement, so nothing else needs to be.

How do I care for them?

Cold machine wash, inside out, with like colours, and dry on low or flat. Heat is what shortens an inseam and tires an elastic waistband. The fabric softens slightly after the first wash and then stays put.
