Design

Hanami means flower viewing, the spring custom of gathering under blossoming trees. These are cut for that pace: a wide balloon leg in thin crinkled cloth, a drawstring at the waist and a hem that falls over the shoe. Nothing below the waist is fitted, and nothing is trying to be.

Description

A wide leg only works if the volume has somewhere to go. Here it goes outward through the thigh and calf in a curve, then tapers very slightly to an open hem that falls over the shoe. The result is a pant that moves rather than hangs.

The waist is fully elasticized and gathered over several rows of channel stitching, with a matching drawstring coming through center-front eyelets and finishing in silver-toned metal aglets. Side seam slip pockets sit out of sight. Across the front of each leg, at knee height, a horizontal tuck seam is the only interruption on the cloth.

The cloth is a thin, crinkled woven with a paper-like washed texture and a dry matte finish. There is no stretch in it, so the shape you see is cut into the pattern rather than borrowed from the yarn. It is mid-rise, full length, and made for spring and summer.

Balloon leg, in plain terms

The Hanami is cut wide from the thigh down. The outer leg curves outward and tapers only very slightly toward an open hem, so the volume starts at the hip and keeps going rather than running in a straight line to the floor. The pants are full length and the hem pools over footwear.

The tuck seam at the knee

A horizontal seam with a tuck flap crosses the front of each leg at knee height. It is the only break in an otherwise plain leg and it gives the eye somewhere to land on a long run of cloth. The side seams and inseams stay vertical.

The waist

The waistband is fully elasticized and gathered, with multiple rows of channel stitching. An exterior drawstring in a matching tone comes out through center-front eyelets and ends in silver-toned metal aglets. These are pull-on pants with a mid rise: the elastic carries the fit and the drawstring lets you set it.

The cloth

A thin woven with a washed, crinkled, paper-like texture and a dry matte finish. There is no stretch in it, so all the shape comes from the pattern. It is a spring and summer weight, not a cold-weather one.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: a wide leg with real volume and a single, clear detail at the knee
  • Pro: elasticized, drawstring waist, so no fastening to fight
  • Pro: seven sizes, M to 5XL
  • Pro: side slip pockets
  • Con: the hem falls over the shoe, so there is no clean ankle line
  • Con: no stretch in the cloth
  • Con: thin fabric, not suited to cold weather
  • Con: we have not listed full garment measurements for this style

Hanami against a straight-leg pant

A straight-leg pant holds one line from hip to hem. The Hanami adds curve and volume through the leg, and the hem lands on top of the shoe instead of stopping above it. Choose a straight leg if you want a clean ankle. Choose this if you want movement in the leg and a plain top to balance it.

What we can say about sizing

There are seven sizes, M to 5XL, and the model is 177cm and 60kg wearing size L. We have not published waist, rise or inseam measurements, so we do not give them here. Returns are accepted within 14 days if the fit is wrong. The return label is paid by the customer and refunds go to the original payment method.

Answers

Questions, answered

Which size should I order?

We have not published a full size chart for this style, so we cannot give waist or leg measurements. What we can say: there are seven sizes, M to 5XL, and the model is 177cm and 60kg wearing size L. The waistband is elasticized with a drawstring, so the waist is adjustable, but the cloth itself has no stretch and the leg is cut wide rather than fitted. If the size is not right, returns are accepted within 14 days.

What is the fabric like?

A thin, lightweight woven with a washed, crinkled texture that looks paper-like and has a dry matte finish. The crinkle is part of the cloth rather than a mark of wear. There is no stretch in it, so the shape comes entirely from the cut. It is sold for spring and summer.

How do the waist and pockets work?

The waistband is fully elasticized and gathered over several rows of channel stitching. A matching exterior drawstring comes out through center-front eyelets and ends in silver-toned metal aglets. They are pull-on, with no belt. Pockets are slip pockets set into the side seams.

What is the seam across the knee?

A horizontal tuck seam crosses the front of each leg at knee height. It is the one interruption on an otherwise plain leg and it breaks up a long run of cloth. The side seams and inseams stay vertical.

How long are they, and do they pool?

They are full length with a plain, uncuffed, straight-cut hem that falls over footwear. Expect the cloth to rest on the shoe rather than stop above it. We have not listed an inseam measurement for this style.

Which color should I choose?

The options are White, Navy, Burgundy and Black, all in the same cut. The photos on this page show the pale off-white version: a uniform cream across the whole garment with a tonal drawstring.

Who are they not for?

Anyone who wants a tapered or cropped leg with a clean ankle, because the hem here falls over the shoe. Anyone who wants stretch in the cloth. And anyone looking for a cold-weather pant, since the fabric is thin and sold for spring and summer.

What do I wear with them?

The legs carry all the volume, so keep the top plain and let the waist show. A tee or a light overshirt works. Choose a low shoe, because the hem will cover most of it.

What is the return policy?

You have 14 days to return an item. The return label is paid by the customer, and refunds go back to the original payment method.
