Design

Suzushi means cool. These are cropped pants with real volume through the hips and thighs and a hem that closes in sharply at the ankle, cut in a thin ice silk that falls rather than clings. The width is in the pattern, not the cloth, so they move like a wide trouser and finish like a tapered one.

Balloon-tapered leg

full through the hips and thighs, narrowing sharply to the ankle

Description

A wide trouser and a tapered one usually argue with each other. The Suzushi lets each do its half: volume where you sit and walk, a narrow finish where the leg stops. Deep pleats start at the waistband and run down the front of each leg, and that is where the fullness is held.

At the bottom, the fullness is tucked into a flat stitched band just above the ankle, so the leg closes in instead of hanging straight. The length is cropped. Two slanted pockets sit at the sides, a subtle faux fly outline marks the center front, and the covered mid-rise waistband closes with a drawstring. No belt.

The cloth is ice silk: thin, with a smooth matte finish and a soft fall. There is slight stretch, so the shape comes from the pattern rather than the yarn. It is cut for summer and it is not a cold-weather trouser.

Volume at the top, a narrow finish at the ankle

Most wide trousers keep their width to the floor. These do not. The leg is full through the hips and thighs, curves out into a barrel, and then narrows sharply toward the ankle. The result is a cropped pant that has room to move in and a hem that finishes cleanly above a shoe.

The length ends just above the ankle, so the shape of the hem is visible. It suits low shoes and thin socks, and it does not rely on a break at the shoe to look finished.

Pleats, tucks and the hem band

The shape is built from three details, all on the front and the hem:

  • Deep vertical pleats start at the waistband and run down the front of each leg. They hold the fullness through the hips and thighs.
  • Tucks sit above the cuff and take the fullness in as the leg narrows.
  • A flat stitched band finishes the hem, so the gathered leg ends in a clean edge.

Two slanted pockets sit at the sides. A flat faux fly outline marks the center front and is decoration only. A small black label tag is set into the right outseam just below the pocket opening.

The cloth

The cloth is ice silk. In this pair it is thin, smooth and matte, and it falls in soft vertical folds instead of holding a stiff shape. That fall is what stops a pleated, full-legged pant from looking bulky. There is slight stretch, so the volume is cut into the pattern rather than borrowed from the yarn.

It is a summer weight. It is not insulated, and it is not the pant to choose for cold weather.

Which size to pick

There are seven sizes, from S (US) M (JP) to 4XL (US) 5XL (JP). We do not list full garment measurements for this pair. The most reliable method is to lay a pair you already own flat and compare the waist and hip, since the cut is full through the hips and thighs. The waistband is covered, with a drawstring closure and no belt.

Green, Black or Grey

The green is a muted sage, closer to grey-green than to a bright green, and it is the color shown in the photos. Black is the easiest to wear with everything else you own. Grey comes in a dark and a light shade.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits anyone who wants a wide, relaxed trouser that still finishes narrow, and who wants it in a thin cloth for warm weather. It is not for anyone who wants a slim straight leg all the way down, a structured pant, or something to wear in the cold.

Answers

Questions, answered

What is ice silk?

Ice silk is the name of the cloth these pants are cut from. In this pair it is thin and smooth with a matte finish, a soft fall and slight stretch. It drapes into vertical folds rather than standing away from the body, which is what the pleated, full-legged cut needs.

How do they fit?

Loose through the hips and thighs, then narrowing sharply to the ankle. The rise is mid and the waistband is covered, with a drawstring closure and no belt. There is only slight stretch in the cloth, so the volume you see comes from the cut, not from the yarn.

Which size should I order?

There are seven sizes, from S (US) M (JP) to 4XL (US) 5XL (JP). We do not list full garment measurements for this pair, so lay a pair you already own flat and compare the waist and hip. Because the leg is cut full, the waist and hip are the two measurements that matter most.

How long are they?

Cropped. The hem ends just above the ankle, which is why they sit well with low shoes and bare ankles or thin socks. The leg narrows to the hem, so the length shows as a clean line rather than a break over the shoe.

What are the pleats and tucks for?

The deep pleats start at the waistband and run down the front of each leg, and they hold the fullness through the hips and thighs. Lower down, tucks above the cuff gather that fullness into a flat stitched band at the hem. Together they give the leg its balloon shape.

Are they thin?

Yes, the cloth is thin and the cut is made for summer. They are not insulated and they are not a cold-weather trouser.

Which color should I choose?

The green is a muted sage, closer to a grey-green than a bright green, and it is the one shown in the photos. Black is the easiest to wear with everything. Grey comes in a dark and a light shade.

Do they have pockets?

Two slanted side pockets at the hips. There is also a flat faux fly outline at the center front, which is decoration only.

Who are they not for?

Anyone who wants a slim straight leg all the way down, or a pant with structure. The silhouette is deliberately full at the top, and the cloth is thin and fluid.

Can I return them if the size is wrong?

Yes, within 14 days. The return label is paid by the customer, and refunds go to the original payment method.
