Design

Raku means ease. The ease here is in the shape: a leg that swells through the thigh and calf, then draws back in at the ankle. The cloth is smooth and structured enough to hold that curve instead of collapsing into it. Pleats, slant pockets and a plain hem do the rest, and nothing is printed on it.

Description

A wide-leg pant only works if the volume has a shape. Let it hang straight and it reads as oversized. Curve it out through the thigh and calf, then bring it back in at the ankle, and it reads as designed. The Raku is the second kind.

The front carries deep pleats that fall from the waistline and give the thigh its room. At the hem, short darts rise from the front edge and draw the leg inward, which creates the lantern curve. The hem itself is turned up and topstitched flat, with no ribbing or elastic, so the line stays clean. Side slant pockets sit in the seam and do not break the shape of the leg.

The cloth is a smooth, compact woven at regular thickness, with a matte finish and no stretch. It is structured enough to hold the round shape, and the volume comes from the pattern rather than from the yarn. Tonal stitching runs throughout, so the shape does the work and nothing else competes with it.

Why the leg is shaped this way

The Raku uses a balloon, or lantern, silhouette. The outer leg curves away from the body through the thigh and calf, then comes back in toward an ankle-length hem. Two details create the curve. Deep pleats at the front give the thigh its room, and short darts stitched upward from the front hem draw the leg inward at the bottom.

A straight wide leg gets its width from the hem. This one gets it from the middle of the leg, so the ankle stays defined and shoes stay visible. The cloth is a smooth, compact woven with a matte finish that holds the round shape instead of collapsing.

Fit and sizing

The cut is extremely loose and the cloth has no stretch, so the room is built into the pattern. Do not size up to get volume, because the volume is already there. The mid-rise sits at the waist, and the closure is a drawstring.

We do not have a measured size chart for this style yet, so we cannot give waist, rise or inseam in centimeters. The sizes run S (US) M (JP), M (US) L (JP), L (US) XL (JP), XL (US) 2XL (JP), 2XL (US) 3XL (JP), 3XL (US) 4XL (JP) and 4XL (US) 5XL (JP). If you are between two, the return window is 14 days, the return label is paid by the customer, and refunds go to the original payment method.

Pockets and the cargo name

The pockets we can show are side slant pockets set along the side seam. There are no patch pockets on the thigh. The style is listed as cargo and workwear, but the effect here is volume and structure, not utility pockets.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: a strong shape from a plain, solid-colour garment with no print.
  • Pro: no stretch means the silhouette stays consistent from the first wear.
  • Pro: the flat hem and ankle length keep shoes visible.
  • Pro: seven sizes, S (US) M (JP), M (US) L (JP), L (US) XL (JP), XL (US) 2XL (JP), 2XL (US) 3XL (JP), 3XL (US) 4XL (JP) and 4XL (US) 5XL (JP), and the style is listed as suitable for plus sizes.
  • Con: very full legs take more room than a straight cut, on a train seat or under a coat.
  • Con: no patch cargo pockets.
  • Con: no stretch, so check the waist carefully.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits someone who wants wide-leg trousers with a defined shape and a clean ankle, and who wears sneakers or low shoes. It is not for anyone who wants a slim or straight leg, a stretch waist, or external cargo pockets.

How to wear it

Because the legs carry all the volume, keep the top simple. A sweatshirt or tee ending around the hip, with low-top sneakers, is how we styled it. The ankle-length cut sits above the shoe, so the shape of the leg stays clear.

Answers

Questions, answered

What is the Raku balloon leg?

It is a wide leg that curves outward through the thigh and calf, then narrows again toward the ankle. The cloth is a smooth, compact woven that holds that rounded shape rather than hanging straight down. The result is a lot of volume above the shoe and a clean, closed line at the hem.

Which size should I order?

We do not have a measured size chart for this style yet, so we cannot give you waist or inseam numbers. What we can say is that the cut is loose by design and the cloth has no stretch, so the volume in the leg is built into the pattern and does not depend on sizing up. The waist is the measurement that matters most, and the drawstring closure gives some adjustment there. If you are between sizes, remember that you have 14 days to return.

Are these actual cargo pants?

They are listed as cargo and workwear pants, but the pockets we can show are side slant pockets set along the side seam. They are not the patch cargo pockets on the thigh that the name might suggest. If you want large external pockets, this is not that. If you want the workwear volume without bulk on the leg, it is.

Are they harem pants?

They share the logic: volume through the thigh and calf, narrowing toward the hem. The difference is the hem. It is a flat, topstitched, turned-up hem with no ribbing or gathered elastic, so the leg closes cleanly at the ankle rather than bunching.

Do they stretch?

No. The cloth is non-stretch and regular thickness. All of the room comes from the cut, which is why the leg looks so full.

How does the waist fasten?

The listing gives a drawstring closure and a mid-rise. In our photos the waist is covered by a sweatshirt, so we cannot show the waistband itself. The deep pleats fall forward from the waistline.

How long are they?

Ankle-length, slightly cropped. In our photos they sit above low-top sneakers. We do not have an inseam measurement yet.

Are there big and tall sizes?

The range runs seven sizes, from S (US) M (JP) up to 4XL (US) 5XL (JP), and the listing marks the style as suitable for plus sizes. The leg is cut very full, which suits a larger frame. Since measurements are not published yet, use the returns window if the first size is off.

What is the difference between Black and Brown?

The cut and details are the same in both. The black is a solid, matte black with tonal stitching, so the pleats and darts show through shape rather than contrast.

What do I wear with them?

The legs carry the volume, so keep the top simple. A sweatshirt or tee, hem ending around the hip, and low-top sneakers is how we styled them. A very long, loose top as well tends to make the whole outfit read as one shape.

What if the size is wrong?

You have 14 days to return it. The return label is paid by the customer, and refunds go back to the original payment method.
