Ryu Dragon Embroidered Bomber Jacket in Burgundy, full-length front view

Design

Ryu means dragon. On this jacket there are several: two facing each other across the chest, more coiling down both sleeves, and a large one across the back beneath a gold crescent moon. It is a bomber with the volume turned up, and it is not trying to be anything quieter.

Description

Heavy embroidery works when it has somewhere to go. The Ryu gives it three surfaces: the chest, the sleeves and the back. Each carries a different scene, so no single area has to hold the whole idea.

The front shows two dragons facing each other, with blossoms, high on the chest. On the sleeves the dragons coil down the length of the arm. The back is the largest panel: one big dragon, a golden crescent moon, white clouds and red floral branches. Thread runs silver, grey, white, red and gold, and the stitching is dense and raised.

Under the embroidery is a plain bomber frame. The satin has a high sheen. The raglan sleeves meet the body on a diagonal seam, a full-length metal zip runs up the front, and the striped ribbed collar, cuffs and hem gather the shape in. Two diagonal welt pockets with red borders sit at the waist. In Burgundy the body is black and the sleeves wine red, so the colour change itself marks where the jacket's panels meet.

Dragons on three surfaces

The embroidery is split across the chest, sleeves and back, not packed into one panel. The front carries two dragons facing each other, with blossoms, high across the upper chest. Each sleeve has a dragon coiling down the arm. The back holds the largest scene: a dragon, a golden crescent moon, white clouds and red floral branches.

The thread is silver, grey, white, red and gold. The stitching is dense and raised, so it has weight and texture against the smooth satin.

The bomber underneath

The frame is a bomber: waist to hip length, a full-length silver-tone metal zip, and raglan sleeves with diagonal seams. The collar is a ribbed baseball-style knit in black with red stripes. The cuffs and the wide hem band are striped rib too, and they gather the jacket in at the wrists and waist. Two diagonal welt pockets with red borders sit at the waist.

In the Burgundy colourway, the body is black and the sleeves are wine red. The colour change follows the raglan seam.

The cloth and the season

The surface is a smooth satin weave with a high-gloss finish. It catches light, so creases and reflections show on both the black and red panels. The jacket is listed as thin and for autumn. That makes it a layer for cool days and evenings, not for cold weather.

Sizing without a chart

Per-size measurements are not published for this jacket yet, so we cannot give you a chest or length number. The sizes are M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL and XXXXL. The maker's height and weight guide covers 165-195cm and 50-120kg across the range.

The cut is listed as casual, though one listing calls it fitted. If you are between sizes, take the larger. The ribbed cuffs and hem hold the shape in, and a tight shoulder or chest is harder to fix than extra room. The return window is 14 days, the return label is paid by the customer, and refunds go to the original payment method.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: embroidery on the chest, sleeves and back, so the jacket reads from every side
  • Pro: full-length zip, plus welt pockets set at the waist
  • Pro: a plain bomber shape, so the rest of the outfit can stay simple
  • Con: the loudest piece in any outfit, by design
  • Con: listed as thin, so it is not a winter coat
  • Con: no published measurements yet

Who it suits

It suits someone who wants one statement layer and will keep everything else plain. A black or white tee and dark straight trousers work. It does not suit anyone after a quiet jacket, a warm winter layer, or a size confirmed to the centimetre before ordering.

Answers

Questions, answered

What is the Ryu jacket?

A satin bomber embroidered with dragons on the chest, both sleeves and the back. It has a full-length metal zip, a ribbed baseball-style collar, striped ribbed cuffs and hem, and two diagonal welt pockets at the waist. It comes in Burgundy or Khaki, M to XXXXL.

Which size should I order?

We have not published per-size measurements for this jacket, so there is no chart to measure against yet. The sizes are M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL and XXXXL, and the maker's own height and weight guide covers 165-195cm and 50-120kg across them. The jacket is listed as a casual fit, though one listing calls it fitted. If you sit between two sizes, take the larger: the ribbed cuffs and hem hold the shape in either way, and a tight shoulder or chest is harder to live with than a little extra room. Returns are open for 14 days, the return label is paid by the customer, and refunds go to the original payment method.

What is the fabric like?

A smooth satin weave with a high-gloss sheen, so the black and red panels catch light and show soft creases and reflections. It is listed as thin and for autumn. Treat it as a light outer layer, not a winter coat. The collar, cuffs and hem are ribbed knit.

Where is the embroidery?

On three areas. The front has two dragons facing each other, with blossoms, across the upper chest. Both sleeves carry coiling dragons running down the arm. The back has a large dragon, a golden crescent moon, white clouds and red floral branches. The thread colours are silver, grey, white, red and gold, and the stitching is dense and raised, so you can feel it.

Burgundy or Khaki?

The photographed Burgundy has a black satin body, wine red sleeves, and black-and-red ribbing. It is the higher-contrast option, with the red sleeves breaking up the black. We have not described the Khaki layout in detail, so check its photos before you choose.

Is it a bomber or a varsity jacket?

The shape is a bomber: zip front, raglan sleeves, and a gathered ribbed hem and cuffs. The collar is the baseball-style rib you see on varsity jackets. The two names are used loosely, and this is one garment.

What do I wear it with?

Keep what is under it plain. The embroidery covers the chest, sleeves and back, so a black or white tee and dark, straight trousers let it do the work. Zipped up, the front shows only the dragons and blossoms on the chest. Open, you see more of the plain tee beneath.

Who is it not for?

Anyone who wants a quiet jacket, since this one is loud on purpose. Also anyone who needs a warm winter layer, or who wants to check measurements before ordering. Those are not published yet.
