Balloon leg, in plain terms
The Sora has three zones. The upper leg is wide, with fullness gathered from the waistband down through the hip and thigh. The middle of the leg curves outward. Below that, vertical darts rising from the hem band pull the leg back in, so the opening at the ankle is narrower than the thigh.
Compared with a straight wide-leg trouser, the difference is in how the leg moves. A straight leg keeps one line. The balloon leg shifts as you walk, because there is more cloth above the ankle than the hem can hold.
Waist and closure
The waistband is fully elasticated and ruched, with multi-row horizontal channel stitching. A white tubular drawstring with black coated tips sits at center front, outside the waistband, so it can be tied loose or snug and is meant to show. The stitching is tone-on-tone. The rise is listed as low.
These pull on. There is no belt and no fly to manage.
Cloth and season
The cloth is a lightweight woven with a fluid, matte drape. It has no stretch, so the shape comes from the cut, not the yarn. It has a washed finish and is listed as wrinkle-free. It is made for spring and summer and is not insulated.
Packaged weight, with packaging included, runs from about 270g in the smallest size to 329g in the largest, depending on color.
Sizing
There are seven sizes, from S (US) M (JP) to 4XL (US) 5XL (JP). We have not published a measured size chart for this style, so we do not give waist, hip or inseam figures here. The cut is loose and the drawstring adjusts the waist, but the hip and thigh are fixed by the cloth. If you are between sizes, compare those areas against pants you already own.
Pockets, hem and length
Two slip pockets are set into the side seams at the hip. They sit inside the seam, so they do not break the line of the fold. The hem is a wide topstitched band, and the pants end at the ankle.
Pros and cons
- Lightweight, fluid cloth that hangs in long vertical folds
- Adjustable waist with an elasticated band and an external drawstring
- Side pockets, pull-on, no belt needed
- Five colors across seven sizes
- The cloth has no stretch, so the hip and thigh room is fixed by the size you choose
- The volume is the design, so it will not give a slim line
- No published measurements yet
Who they are not for
If you want a slim or tapered-from-the-thigh leg, these will feel like too much. If you want a stretch fabric, look elsewhere. If you need a warm layer, these are cut for spring and summer. If you need exact measurements before ordering, we do not have them for this style yet.
